The Advent wreath at The Cathedral of St. Andrew is unique. It was commissioned in 1999 by the then Dean, Peter Courtney, and created by artists Scott Fitzel and K.C. Grennan both of whom studied at the University of Hawaii and now work in Seattle.
According to the current Provost, The Very Rev. Tim Sexton W. Sexton, The tendrils of steel represent the roots and shoots of the banyan tree common on the Hawaiian landscape.
The contemporary piece is evocative and dramatic as it hangs in the Gothic cathedral. My own experience in seeing the sculpture was invitation to participate in the life and dance of the Holy Trinity (perichoresis) as active waiting in the long march of time toward the consummation.
