Come the Waters: Baptism and
Our Ministry of Welcoming
Seekers and Making Disciples

by Daniel T. Benedict Jr. A
pastoral invitation to
congregations and their leaders to
practice deep hospitality to those
God is drawing into the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ. It
draws upon the ancient church's
way of making disciples. Is it time
for our churches to move from
gaining members to making
disciples?

The North American Association for the
Catechumenate seeks to promote and nurture
the catechumenal process in order that the whole
make disciples, baptizing and teaching all peoples.
NAAC seeks:
  • To provide for annual gatherings, correspondence,
and publications for an exchange of information
    pertaining to the catechumenal process
  • To advocate for — and to promote a better
understanding of — the catechumenal process
  • To be available to all denominations at all levels to
advise and assist in the implementation and
    development of the catechumenal process
  • To promote and effectively implement the
inculturation and adaptation of the catechumenate

The North American Forum on the
Catechumenate is an International Network of
Pastoral Ministers, Liturgists, Catechists, and
Theologians. Since 1981 the Forum has united
and supported pastoral ministers in the U.S.,
Canada, and beyond.

  • Dedicated to making a fully implemented
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults a reality
    for all.
  • Supporting the reconciliation ministries
    implicit in the Rite.
  • Committed to evangelization and conversion
    through catechesis, liturgy, discipleship, and
    mission.
  • Celebrating all cultural gifts.
Easter Vigil is our dying and our rising with Christ in
baptism (Rom. 6:1-14), either our baptism or our renewal
of the baptismal covenant. Theoretically, the amount of
water, however miniscule, is enough. But if we are to live
the symbols and signs of our identity and mission
powerfully, can we be content with drops when the grace
of God is both immense and all consuming? Can we be
satisfied with a "water mark" instead a "brand"!

This week we journey to the cross and the death of
sin--our sin--gratefully accepting not only justifying grace
but the grace that sanctifies by the power of the Holy
Spirit. So we come again at Easter to be a water-washed
and Spirit-born people. So, get ready to end the fast and
to shout the "A" word anew and live wet!

The Impact of the RCIA: Stories,
Reflections, Challenges, ed. by Jerry
Galipeau, (World Library Publications,
2008) received third place award in the
Catholic Press Association's
"professional book" category.

The award was presented with these
words:

"This small book helps the reader understand
the impact that the RCIA has made on the
Church during the last twenty years. At the same
time it is also useful in providing a glimpse into
what may be possible in the years that lie
ahead. The fifteen essays are of the same high
quality--each very readable, pastoral, and
useful: no small accomplishment for the editor
who compiled all these wonderful stories."

Among the fifteen authors, the only
non-Catholic essay--"'A Period of
Well-Suited Instruction:' An Ecumenical
Perspective" was written by Daniel
Benedict.

The RCIA--
Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults is the contemporary process the
Roman Catholic Church follows in
relating to and forming new persons for
baptism and Christian discipleship. Other
churches have adapted and adopted this
practice. Daniel's book,
Come to the
Waters (Discipleship Resources, 1996) is
a pastoral invitation to United Methodists
to adopt this robust formational process.
