The Eucharist and Singing: A Conversation with Lucien DeissLucien
Deiss
prepared by Daniel Benedict, OSL

This presentation draws heavily upon the work of Lucien Deiss in his Visions of Liturgy and Music for
a New Century

My intent in posting this digest of Deiss’ reflection on song in the liturgy is to integrate it with
application to local church practice by actually listening to and singing the music of the liturgy. There
are references or links to the dialogues and acclamations of  the Eucharist which I propose that you
and your congregation or music leaders explore as a way for exploring Deiss’ proposals. If you will
be using this with a group, you will need an accompanist to play some of the music near the end of
the presentation. The early part of the presentation covers Deiss' understanding of
the church's
youthfulness, the central role of the congregation, and the ministerial function of music and song
